The future of the Medicaid expansion program enacted by the Montana state legislature, wouldn’t be so precarious had it relied less on federal subsidies. Whatever happens with the federal Affordable Care Act, if it removes the funding for the states, Montana will be faced with having to revamp its program.

2019 Biennium Budget Proposal
Governor Bullock unveiled his proposed two-year budget earlier this month. Here are the highlights:
- Expenditures will decrease $8.7 million in fiscal year 2018 and increase by $44 million in FY 2019.
- New tax bracket of 7.9% for individuals who make more than $500,000 a year.

New Staff Joins Vet Entrepreneurship Program


Two new staff members have joined The Veterans Business Outreach Center (VBOC).
Sara Hudson, VBOC Region VIII Director, introduced Brian Clemons as Project Manager, and Mike Waters as Project Support Specialist, for the VBOC Region VIII Director, to the board members of Big Sky Economic Development (BSED) and of Big Sky Economic Development Corporation (EDC) at their recent meeting.

No One Knows What Changes Will Come


No one expressed any doubt that things will change with the Affordable Care Act during the Montana Healthcare Forum, but no one knew what those changes will be.
It will be, without doubt, “choppy waters” rather than “smooth sailing,” going forward, Kim Gillan, director of U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Region VIII, told some 200 attendees at the Double Tree in Billings.

Lack of Funds Delays Highway Construction Projects


The Montana Department of Transportation has announced that at least $127 million in highway construction projects will be delayed until May 2017 due to lack of funds. Darryl James, Executive Director of the Montana Infrastructure Coalition called the news “devastating.” The Governor’s budget not only fails to shore up the budget, but cuts it $200 million more from the FY18 budget.
