Virginia City Celebrates 150 Years

Discipline and Right-to-Know Workshops

The Professional Development Center, Montana Department of Administration, is bringing two of its most popular workshops to Billings, "Effective Disciplinary Action" will, February 26 (8:30-4:30), and "A Delicate Balance: Privacy and the Right to Know", February 27 (8:30-4:30). "Effective Disciplinary Action workshop will explore the responsibilities of managers to set and maintain standards of performance and conduct. Participants will learn about the issues associated with discipline and how to communicate to prevent problems, as well as how to address problems.

The workshop will address good cause, due process, documentation, and progressive discipline. "A Delicate Balance: Privacy and the Right to Know" provides the opportunity for attorneys and employees of state and local government to learn more about the right to know, the right of privacy, the Open Meetings Act, and related laws. Through case studies and discussion, participants will determine the extent to which Montana's constitution demands openness in government. The seminar will identify relevant constitutional sections, statutes, and court decisions that affect the actions and responsibilities of government agencies. Sponsored by the Professional Development Center, training arm of the Montana Department of Administration, both workshops will be led by John Moore, the Center's director. BikeNet's Annual Meeting

BikeNet will give the public a chance to learn what's planned for bike trails. BikeNet's Annual Meeting is planned for February 28 at 7 pm.  Since 2001, more than 35 miles of trails have been paved. Still, many trails are not connected, and there are areas where there are no trails.  With five new projects in the works, BikeNet will provide some of the matching funds required by the Community Transportation Enhancement Program (CTEP).  

The Annual Meeting will take place at the Mansfield Health Education Center at 2900 12th Ave. North in downtown Billings. Global Development Services, Inc., manager of the Montana World Trade Center (MWTC), with the support of the Missoula Economic Partnership, has been working on a development project for market entry opportunities in the Bakken. Montana State University (MSU) College of Business announces the schedule for the State Farm Insurance Family Business Program "On the Road" series. The 37th Annual MATE Show and Home & Health Expo will kick off on Thursday, February 14 at MetraPark in Billings and run through Saturday, February 16.  Doors are open each day from 10 am to 6 pm, except for Saturday when the show closes at 5 pm.  Over 350 exhibitors will be displaying their products in over 700 booths covering over 100,000 square feet, making it the largest show of this kind in Montana. The IRS announced a simplified option that many owners of home-based businesses and some home-based workers may use to figure their deductions for the business use of their homes. In tax year 2010, the most recent year for which figures are available, nearly 3.4 million taxpayers claimed deductions for business use of a home The new optional deduction, capped at $1,500 per year based on $5 a square foot for up to 300 square feet, will reduce the paperwork and recordkeeping burden on small businesses by an estimated 1.6 million hours annually. ...

Classes Offered for Small Businesses at EDA

Big Sky Economic Development is offering three classes in March designed to provide support for small businesses and non-profits in Yellowstone County.

The community development specialists at Big Sky Economic Development will present a free introductory workshop about the grant-seeking process on Wednesday, March 13, from 3 – 4:30 p.m. in the Big Sky Economic Development conference center located on the first floor of Granite Tower, 222 North 32nd Street in Billings. Patty Nordlund and Dianne Lehm will help community groups learn the basics of the grants process, types of grants, and who might be eligible for grant funds. Participants will also learn where to search for appropriate funding sources. While there is no fee to attend, pre-registration for the grants workshops is required and seating is limited to 25 attendees per session. Interested participants should call Mary Lou at 406.256.6871 to reserve their place at the Workshop on or before Tuesday, March 12th.

Then on Wednesday, March 20, Big Sky Economic Development's Small Business Development Center is offering a Pre-Business Workshop from 3 to 5 p.m. in the conference center located on the first floor of Granite Tower.The 2-hour class walks prospective business owners through a host of essential topics including how to write a business plan, get a business license and ways to begin looking for financing. On Tuesday, March 26 from 4 to 5:30 p.m., the Procurement Technical Assistance Center at Big Sky Economic Development is hosting an Intro to Government Contracting workshop. The class will work with small and medium sized businesses to help them asses their viability for government contracting, review required registrations and develop a focused marketing strategy for government customers. The Montana Economic Outlook 2013, presented annually by the Bureau of Business and Economic Research, will be held in Billings on Tuesday, February 5.
The half-day of economic information, from 8 am to 1 pm, at the Crowne Plaza, will be the 38th year of the event. This year will focus upon what's in store for health care. Larry White, director of the Western Montana Area Health Education Center at the University of Montana, will be one of the featured presenters.
The seminar will also be presented in Helena on Jan. 29; Great Falls on Jan. 30; Missoula Feb, 1; Bozeman, Feb. 6; Butte, Feb. 7; Kalispell, Feb. 15; Sidney, March 12; and Miles City, March 13.

The 10th Annual Cowboy & Cowgirl Reunion for the Montana Pro Rodeo Hall and Wall of Fame will be held in Billings on Saturday, Jan. 26, 1 pm to 11 pm at the Holiday Inn Grand.
