Engineers Award Outstanding Members

During the Billings Engineers Club, Inc. annual awards banquet on Feb. 26, Tyrel Clark from KLJ was awarded the 2016 BEC Young Engineer award, and Carl Anderson from Morrison-Maierle, Inc. was awarded the 2016 BEC Distinguished Service award. The BEC Project of the Year Award was awarded to the East End Industrial Area Storm Drain by Morrison-Maierle, Inc.

Billings on the Road

Visit Billings, in partnership with Diversified Transfer and Storage (DTS) is rolling out five wrapped semi-trucks featuring stunning imagery of Billings and the surrounding areas encouraging travelers to explore Big Sky Country. The truck routes go as far east as Indiana and as far west as Los Angeles, effectively spanning two-thirds of the country with the localized messaging.

County Names EMS Director

Brad Shoemaker has been named by Yellowstone County Commissioners as the new Department of Emergency Services Director. Shoemaker, who currently works for the Department of Natural Resources and Conservation (DNRC) Southern Land Office, as a forester, edged out the other contenders for the position.

Dining Local

As we begin 2016, I am continuing the goal to Dine Local. This has been such an exciting and surprising journey.
Dan and I drove out to Laurel to have dinner at the Beartooth Grill. We had “heard” from a neighbor that the food and atmosphere was great, and they were correct . It was definitely worth the drive from the Heights. The menu had an abundance of choices; seafood, pasta, steaks and burgers.

Women’s Run Unveils Design

The Montana Women’s Run (May 7) has unveiled this year’s t-shirt design. Commemorating the 35th year of the race, it features a stylized Bitterroot flower and female runner at the center of the design. Creator Jim Heins states that the stylized flower and plant shapes (including the signature Bitterroot) form a visual impression of a blooming flower garden.

Chamber Receives Five-Star Accreditation

The Billings Chamber of Commerce received word that it will again receive Five-Star Accreditation through the U.S. Chamber of Commerce; they have received the highest national designation. The U.S. Chamber awards accreditation to chambers for their sound policies, effective organizational procedures, and positive impact on their communities. Only 3 percent of chambers nationwide are accredited, and just 1 percent receive five-star accreditation.

The Changing Face of Downtown

Passersby are likely to see some changes occurring, at the corner of Montana Avenue and 23rd Avenue North, on the exterior of the Sawyer Building. Some dramatic changes have already occurred inside, as new owners prepare the historic building for its next use. Exactly what that will be has yet to be determined, according to Chandler Griffin, a commercial real estate broker who is a member of the investor group that purchased the building from Ed McCrone.
